Writing is more an art than science. Concise article writing is referred to communicating everything you need to convey in as few words as possible. Concise writing improves comprehension and clarity. Also, it makes your readers come again and have another look at your website, eBooks or any platform of published content and share it often. However, concise writing doesn’t come naturally to everyone.

To help our visitors maintain, focus and write without the hassle of excessive words in the content; Word Count Jet is there to support them for concise writing with word and character count along with spacing and without spacing. The tool is efficient enough to polish your skills; moreover, below are some description with examples to help you out with concise writing.

Sculpt Your Content

Sculpting a sentence is just like making it dance around your beautiful node curves. Eliminate unnecessary words and create a fluent rhythm to give your readers a pleasurable experience. Make them feel light and relaxed through your content.

To sculpt content, break them into small pieces and work on an individual one. Headlines, opening paragraph, listing, main body and closing paragraph are some essential components of an article. Consider writing every sentence with a new line and focus. This will make summarizing easy. Also, focus on meaningful words first then start eliminating additional words. For example; “When I started my own business, it has given me a whole new perspective to see the bigger picture when it comes to finding a work-life balance.” Can be written as; “Starting my own business has given me a new perspective on work-life balance.”

Hence, in the example above, “the bigger picture” and “a new perspective” are similar phrases so you can choose one and eliminate the other. The reason for removing phrases is most words have the same meaning and are weak. So you don’t have to fret lengthy.

“To add a splash of colour” can be written as “to splash colours”, “To provide comments” as “to comment” and “To make progress” as “to progress”. These nouns “comments,” “splash,” and “progress” are called “zombie nouns.” They may sound impressive, but they suck the lifeblood out of your verbs. (Helen Sword, New York Times)

Craft Your Content

Your tools are not your rules. Concise writing is learning how to use an available set of tools; however, they don’t follow any rule to stick you out. Tools are all about effects and cause while rules are about filtering right and wrong. Build the right thing for your readers by using tools, not just following states.

Clamping sentences is the primary tool in a writer’s toolbox. There are no strict rules to bound you how much you should tighten your existing sentences; it’s a writer’s voice. It just needs to be careful not to chisel away fascinating details to get the life out of content. Write as concise as possible but don’t make it the only goal to achieve. Communicate your message effectively with clarity to connect and inspire with the readers.

Choose Words Carefully

Keeping your language and tone simple with words small makes your writing more comfortable to read and direct. Audiences are not always aware of jargons and adding unnecessary technical terms makes it complicated.

For example; “It’s not difficult to ascertain how much RAM your computer is utilizing.” This sentence is a perfect fit to make your readers scratch their heads. Hence, make it simple as; “It’s easy to find out how much memory your computer is using.”

Use Fewer Words

Weak verbs and adverbs clutter sentences. Instead, use a strong word to replace two inadequate words like “Healthier” can be used in alternative of “very healthy”. Also “think up a plan” can be replaced with “devise a plan.” “Go around the country” can be substituted with “travel the country.” Similarly, don’t write “a severe problem” say “a crisis” instead. “If” also kills clarity in some places. According to William Strunk, omitting needless words can add strength to your writing and interest in your readers.

Avoid Redundancy

An unknown stranger, joined together, at the present moment in time, 9 a.m. in the morning, added bonus; these are redundant phrases that kill good writing. It feels just like you have received a gift and someone asks you if it was free or not. Obviously, gifts are free, so you don’t have to write “free gifts” at all.

Use Active Voice

Writers love to use passive voice. Subject undergoes action rather than doing it in a passive tone. However, the active voice adds clarity within a few words. For example “The paper was written by the student” can be changed to “The student wrote the paper.”

Avoid Qualifiers

Qualifiers are basically adverbs to show the moderation degree in voice. They include; somewhat, basically, really, generally, and very. They don’t add any meaning; hence, it’s better to avoid them. Using fewer words is more empathetic to the reader. For example; “We’re really happy with our new product” can be written as “We’re delighted with our new product.”

Replace Negatives

“Clients who do not subscribe to our newsletter will not receive a gift” can be written as “Clients who subscribe to our newsletter will receive a gift.” Replacing negative convo with affirmatives will reduce wordiness.

Edit Aggressively

“Write without fear and edit without mercy” (anonymous). Hence, writing is a continuous draining process which you edit as you go deep. After writing, take some time away and return to your piece to remove the fluff. Repetitions, lengthy sentences and fillers can be eliminated. Make your every word count.

Maintain Focus

Take a break after every two hundred words, remove distractions, silence phone and ignore social media and emails while writing. Also, check facts and references later, don’t stop in the middle for researching, do it before or after writing. To enhance productivity, you don’t have to be precise, try to be concise and write in small bursts.

Practice Often

Focusing on healthy and meaningful words will help you to understand what and how your content should convey your message. By this, your work becomes more concise, and your message more clear. However, concise writing takes a decent amount of time, effort and dedication than you may think. At times, writers may pull away hairs wondering how to make the sentence shorter, don’t despair, that normal and often.

Concise writing needs practice, and the approach is not an exam, it’s more like a game. You need to work through variations, and you don’t have to keep yourself fussing for hours and give yourself time limits or deadlines. The more you practice, the faster you can concise your writing.

Less Is More

Lastly, concise writing offers your readers more with a less. It enables the writer to convey ideas and thoughts more effectively while keeping readers attentive and engaged for long. Once you know how to write concisely, you will better reach your goals with your masterpiece.
